2. There are a lot more smelly people in Italy than in France. A LOT.
3. You can walk down a random street and turn the corner and there's an open air market, with vendors selling everything from artisan jewelry to cheap scarves or cheese and salami to candied nuts. It's pretty cool. Except for when it is raining and you wore your flip flops and didn't bring a jacket because you were just running to the grocery store and you didn't realize it was actually raining but thankfully you brought your umbrella and you look silly with your feet all wet so you don't really want to shop you just want to dry your toes.
4. Gelato is always a good idea.
5. I cannot watch netflix or hulu over here which is lame. I cannot even watch movies thru our satellite service because I'm not in the U.S. Oh well, I'd rather be in Italy anyways.
6. People do not really look at each other/greet each other like I thought they would. Maybe because this is a busier city, but I still found it surprising.
7. In order to take out the trash, I have to leave my building and walk down the street to a dumpster. Every so often, there are at least 3 dumpsters lined on the street, taking up valuable parking spots, and other containers for recyclable materials. I couldn't find the one for plastics, so I dumped it and felt really bad and hoped no one saw me. Don't judge me.
8. It may be because Italy is higher than S.D. in latitude, but it's almost 8pm and not even close to being dark. It was the same in France - you would think it was 7pm and it was 9pm. It's cool, but I bet in winter it gets dark at 4:30, which isn't cool at all.
9. I discovered Lambrussco, which is like prosecco (sparkling wine) only it's sparkling RED wine. It is delicious.
here are a few pictures of where I live (click to enlarge):

Canal just near my building. This side is connected to my building.

The other side of the canal that runs next to my house. It's really pretty

Lots of arches in the city center. And shutters.

My front door. #8. Do you like the welcome mat? Thankfully I'm on the "1st" floor as there is no elevator. Technically I'm on the second floor but they call it the 1st.

Directly to my left and then right you would see the canals. My door is to the left of the arch over the road, the little door in the corner.

DeleteYou two are sooo silly.lol But it s true.I stilll miss Naples and know just how you feel. There is a certain atmosphere there that is becconing for sure. The little"alleys" with the vendors is just an example. And the late night hours== it is amazing how young and old can stay up so late. here we are going to bed at 8Pm unless we are watching Amazing Race (last episode tonight) and Survivor.
DeleteI am sooooo very happy for you that the friends do last minute things and include you. Give them big hugs from me (Gramma) and thank them for taking such good care of you. Where are Nathaniel and Monica from?? It is easy to see how they can pioneer and get their hours with the bus, train and walking they do to find the English. CHA CHING!!!! You must be racking up the time :) When all else fails it is MickeyD's to the rescue. Are their fries the same???? to die for, for sure. teeheehee. Too Funny!! The need greaters. haha who coined that?? a laugh a minute. The pics are great too Keep um coming. sorry I don't have time to write more, but you know why.... Love Ya, Gramma
Nathaniel is from Africa, I'm not sure exactly where, might be Nigeria - there are a lot of Nigerians in Bologna. Monica is from Italy, she's been in English for a few years, I forget how long exactly.
DeleteMcD's fries here taste exactly like at home - they are delicious lol
on your other blog you wanted ideas for a day trip.
ReplyDeletewhy don't you head on over to milan (about 2 hours) and shop for shoes! :)
also a "haute couture powerhouse" with boutiques all in one convenient spot
http://www.timeout.com/milan/features/49/20-great-things-to-do-in-milan
love ya.
i'm scared to shop for shoes lol i might get carried away!!!
Deletei ended up just staying in town today because i didn't have enough time to go anywhere and get back in time for meeting. so i shall plan something maybe for friday.
it is actually easy to not shop here because everything that is of decent quality or good quality is really expensive - or at least it is with the exchange rate :/ i really won't be bringing hardly anything back home - even souvenirs - there hasn't been anything worth spending euros on! it's ok i can save that money for the next adventure ;)
Well, make sure you get yourself something. In my closet is a dress that mom bought in Italy. She has two of them, they are beautiful. Just too short and to small, hee, hee. :) And Krista has dolls or toys from all over the world that her grandma got her on all her travels. They were so special, I loved looking at them. So get something special that you will always have. That's an order! And you have to go to Milan, just the word is exquisite, just to say you've been to Milan :)
ReplyDeleteI will get something special for myself if i find it - but so far I haven't found anything that i just cant live without. i did get two scarves in paris, which definitely remind me of paris - practically everyone wears scarves over there. here too, but not as much as over there. i think when i go to florence i'll find some things.
